Founder's Story - Dottie DeCarlo

Why Fractional by Design™

I started my career in customer service at one of the world’s top consumer banks, and worked REALLY HARD on my way up into leadership roles in technology, operations, and HR, supporting strategic efforts that drove real business performance.

But what most people didn’t see behind the title and trajectory was this:
The first 10 years of my career, I was also a single mom—hustling, juggling, and grinding through the demands of motherhood, corporate life, travel, and going to college at night.

I know what it means to build something from the inside out.

I climbed, not because it was easy, but because I was determined to create something better.

And after two decades in corporate, I realized it was time to create something better for myself, too. I wasn’t burned out. I wasn’t done. I was just ready to lead on my terms.

So I stepped away and became a small business owner in the pet industry for five years - 2 of which were during the pandemic! That chapter showed me the power, the grit - the messy, meaningful, and at times - isolating job of a business owner. Hats off to every small business owner grinding every single day!

After selling my business, I pivoted to consulting with small businesses in the wine industry (cheers!) and coaching and personal development industries, helping founders bring clarity, structure, and direction to their operations. Eventually, I stepped into fractional leadership, serving as a Chief of Staff providing experienced, trustworthy support - without the full-time commitment. Those lived experiences—corporate, entrepreneurial, and personal are what inspired me to build Fractional by Design™: A 360° collective that supports both sides of the table:

I created this because I’ve lived it.
